Expected role in 2019

Valdes-Scantling started the season as the fourth wide receiver on the depth chart behind Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison. Injuries to Cobb and Allison did increase his opportunities — he started 10 games and, according to Pro Football Reference, played on 64.34 percent of the Packers’ offensive snaps.

But all signs are pointing to an increased role in 2019. Cobb is no longer on the roster, and even with Allison returning from a season-ending injury, it’s Valdes-Scantling who could be the starter at wide receiver with Adams in LaFleur’s offense. That’s the role he had at the start of minicamp in June.

I recently wrote about the success of the Packers’ second wide receiver for fantasy football in recent years. Interestingly, it was an article about Geronimo Allison as I expected him to be a starter in LaFleur’s offense. But with MVS looking more and more likely to have a significant role in this offense, he could be the receiver to break out for the Packers.

According to Pro Football Focus, Valdes-Scantling had the third-best separation rate among wide receivers in the league in 2018, which is another reason to be excited about his role in LaFleur’s offense.

Adams might be Aaron Rodgers‘ go-to target, but MVS could see a large share of the targets this season.
