4. How will the new additions to the defense be used?

Gone are Nick Perry and Clay Matthews. Gone are Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Kentrell Brice. In are Za’Darius and Preston Smith, as well as Rashan Gary. In are Adrian Amos and Darnell Savage.

How will these new pieces gel together and how will they be used? Gary and Za’Darius Smith have position versatility to move inside, as well as rush from the outside. Preston Smith can cover as well as rush.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine now has three versatile chess pieces he can move around and use how he sees fit, bringing in an element of unpredictability.

The same could be said about Amos and Savage. Both would seem to have clearly defined roles as Amos’ strength is in the box with Savage’s being a centerfield type. But Savage is a former corner with ball skills that could be used to help in the slot, and Amos is a smart assignment sure player who could be used anywhere.

On paper, the Packers have more talent than they have had in a long time on defense. The five new additions, paired with returning players, should give the Packers the best defense they have had in a while. I’m excited to see how that starts.
