Packers 53-man roster predictions for second week of training camp
Tight ends (4)
Jimmy Graham, Marcedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger, Robert Tonyan
There’s a lot to like about the Packers’ tight ends, and it’s possible they decide to keep four on the roster.
The Packers will be hoping Jimmy Graham gets back to top form in 2019. But the key will be to let him do what he does best, which is catch passes. Not block.
Marcedes Lewis is an excellent blocker, and Green Bay re-signed him this offseason for a reason.
Robert Tonyan’s stock appears to be rising. He made a spectacular touchdown grab against the Seattle Seahawks last season, but could he be in line for a bigger opportunity in 2019? According to WFRV Sports Anchor Lily Zhao, Tonyan was working with the ones during Sunday’s practice.
And Cheesehead TV’s Aaron Nagler believes Tonyan is currently the TE2 on the roster.
Will the Packers decide to go with three or four tight ends? That’s the question. Graham is a roster lock, and third-round pick Jace Sternberger isn’t going anywhere.
If the Packers go with three tight ends, it’ll come down to either Lewis or Tonyan. But based on the reports from training camp so far, Tonyan looks to be the most likely to win that battle.
But it’s early days, and this is a position to watch closely in the coming weeks.
