Packers: Five players to watch in preseason opener vs. Texans
5. Robert Tonyan
Jimmy Graham might be the number one tight end on the depth chart, but there is a huge opportunity for the young players at the position. One of them is Robert Tonyan, who can take a step towards the number two spot with an impressive preseason.
Tonyan, best known for his spectacular 54-yard touchdown grab at Seattle last season, has impressed his head coach.
“I’m excited about him,” Matt LaFleur said earlier this week. “I think he gets better each and every day, not only in the pass game but in the run game. He’s a valuable piece, another young player, and it’ll be fun to watch him in those preseason situations.”
Tonyan has also earned praise from Aaron Rodgers, which is another great sign for the young tight end.
It was clear LaFleur wanted Tonyan to stay in Green Bay when the team brought him back with an exclusive rights tender in the offseason.
Competing with Marcedes Lewis, Jace Sternberger and Pharoah McKever for snaps, Tonyan has the opportunity to play a significant role in LaFleur’s offense this season. Various reports from training camp have been about his good performances so far at practice.
Now he needs to play well in the preseason opener.
