Packers 53-man roster predictions following preseason opener
Running backs (4)
Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Dexter Williams, Danny Vitale
With Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams both sidelined with hamstring injuries on Thursday night, rookie Dexter Williams was given a featured role. And he played well, leading the Packers in rushing with 14 attempts for 62 yards. He averaged a healthy 4.4 yards per carry. Williams also had an 18-yard reception.
The Packers surprisingly released Corey Grant on Thursday, which should secure the number three position for Williams at least. He may even overtake Jamaal Williams on the depth chart before the regular season gets underway.
Fullback Danny Vitale is going to have an important role in this offense. He caught one pass for four yards in Thursday’s game, but reports from training camp have all been encouraging about his performances.
This is Aaron Jones’ backfield. Once he returns from injury, he’ll be the featured back for the Packers. Jamaal Williams and Dexter Williams will also be on the field for plenty of snaps, but preseason could determine who is the number two on the depth chart.
Tra Carson misses out on the roster. He had eight carries for only 15 yards in Thursday’s win over the Texans. He’ll need to improve in the next preseason game to have a chance of making the roster.
