Packers: Five players to watch in preseason vs. Ravens
By Jesse Fry
Elgton Jenkins
One of the two listed offensive starters to play against Houston was Lane Taylor. Coach Matt LaFleur stated Taylor is in a battle for his job and Elgton Jenkins is his main competition.
Taylor is coming off a down year in 2018 and the Packers took Jenkins in the second round of the 2019 draft as a result.
So far in camp, Jenkins has been as good as advertised. He has quick feet, anchors well in the pass game and has the agility needed for the zone scheme LaFleur runs.
With Lucas Patrick and Justin McCray also playing well on the interior, Taylor will have to be head and shoulders better than Jenkins to make this squad. Should Jenkins prove to be ready to play this year, Taylor could find himself with a new team after cuts.
The Ravens give the Packers the perfect fit to see how far along Jenkins is. Baltimore always has a well coached and ready defense able to throw just about everything at Jenkins even with the vanilla schemes teams run in the preseason.
If I were Coach LaFleur, I’d want to see his first-team offensive line with Rodgers in a game before the opener. It’s all but guaranteed Rodgers won’t play in the fourth preseason game, so if that’s the case Jenkins will need to be in there this week or next.
