Packers should sign linebacker after injuries to Burks, Bolton
Following injuries to Oren Burks and Curtis Bolton, the Green Bay Packers should sign an inside linebacker.
Going into the preseason, inside linebacker was arguably the weakest position on the Green Bay Packers‘ roster. Not because of starters Blake Martinez or Oren Burks, but rather the lack of depth the team had at the position.
Well, injuries sure haven’t helped. The Packers lost Burks in the preseason-opening victory over the Houston Texans. While his injury won’t require surgery, it’s still unclear when he’ll be able to make his return.
With Burks out, Curtis Bolton looked to have stepped up into the starting role next to Martinez. But Bolton could now miss time with a right knee injury.
Not many details have been announced about Bolton’s injury, but Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on Friday that the team was awaiting MRI results. But considering Bolton left the game on crutches and with a knee brace, according to Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, it’s fair to say he’s doubtful for Week 1.
Rookie Ty Summers is likely to be the starter with Martinez while Burks and Bolton are out. While Summers has made some good plays in the preseason, he’s also missed a lot of tackles.
With a lack of depth at linebacker, the Packers should consider making a signing.
Mason Foster is currently a free agent, and he would be able to start in the Packers defense and make a difference right away. Foster started all 16 games for the Washington Redskins last season, making 133 tackles, seventh-most in the NFL.
Another option would be Antonio Morrison, who started eight games for the Packers last season and has experience in Mike Pettine’s system.
The Packers could also decide to wait to see if any linebackers become available when teams cut their rosters to 53 players. That said, the sooner they make a move, the better.
Don’t be surprised if the Packers bring in a linebacker in the near future.
