The Green Bay Packers are releasing safety Josh Jones.

Josh Jones‘ future was uncertain for much of the summer. Back in May, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that the Green Bay Packers safety had requested a trade. Now just under two weeks away from the start of the regular season, the team has decided to move on.

This isn’t a surprising move as Jones hadn’t featured in any of the Packers’ three preseason games. They also recently brought back safety Ibraheim Campbell, who played well in 2018 before his season was ended with a torn ACL.

The Packers have to be comfortable with their depth at safety. It was a focus of the offseason for general manager Brian Gutekunst, with the team signing Adrian Amos in the opening week of free agency. They also traded up in the first round of the draft in April to select Darnell Savage Jr.

And with Raven Greene playing well this summer, and Campbell returning, Green Bay has talent and depth at the position. Natrell Jamerson could also win a spot on the 53-man roster.

It’s disappointing for Jones and the Packers. He played 29 games in two seasons, making 126 tackles, three sacks, seven pass defenses and an interception.

Green Bay would’ve been hoping for more when they drafted Jones in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, notably right before wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and running back Alvin Kamara, who have both been Pro Bowlers in their first two seasons.

But it’s important to note that since the Packers drafted Jones, they’ve made a change at head coach, general manager and defensive coordinator. Moving on is the best move for Jones and the Packers at this stage.

Jones now gets an opportunity to sign with another team and show why he was a second-round pick two years ago.
