Packers: Three players to watch vs. Chiefs in preseason
Three players to watch for the Green Bay Packers in their final preseason game.
Preseason comes to an end this week as the Green Bay Packers host the Kansas City Chiefs, one week ahead of their regular-season kickoff game against the Chicago Bears.
This won’t be a game for the starters, rather the players on the roster bubble competing for a spot on the 53-man roster.
Here are three players to watch for the Packers:
1. Tra Carson, RB
Entering the fourth preseason game, running back Tra Carson still has an excellent opportunity to win the number three job behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams.
Head coach Matt LaFleur praised Carson last week, noting his work in pass protection. But he’s yet to make a significant contribution as a runner in the preseason.
In three games, Carson has 23 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown, averaging 2.43 yards per attempt. He rushed for 15 yards on eight attempts in the opener, then nine yards on six carries in the second game, before improving last week with nine carries for 32 yards and a touchdown.
Can Carson finish preseason with a strong performance and earn a spot on the roster?
2. Chandon Sullivan, CB
With so much talent at cornerback already, it won’t be easy for Chandon Sullivan to win a spot on the 53-man roster. But he can’t be too far off after an impressive preseason.
Sullivan’s best game was last week against the Oakland Raiders. He made three tackles in the game and a team-high four pass breakups. Sullivan has been making plays throughout the preseason, including an interception he returned 18 yards in the preseason opener.
If Sullivan can put in his best performance yet this week against the Chiefs, a spot on the 53-man roster can’t be ruled out.
3. Darrius Shepherd, WR
The battle at wide receiver continues into the final week, but Darrius Shepherd has been outstanding. In three preseason games, he’s made seven receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
On special teams, Shepherd has returned two kickoffs for 51 yards and averages 8.5 yards per punt return.
Trevor Davis‘ return from injury could impact Shepherd’s chances of making the roster, but all he can focus on is his own performance. And if Shepherd puts in another good game on Thursday night, it’s possible he’ll have done enough for a roster spot.
