Thursday’s preseason game is the final opportunity for players to impress before the 53-man roster is determined later this week.

On Thursday night, the Green Bay Packers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in their final preseason game. While it’s almost certain the starters won’t be out there, this is the final audition for the players on the roster bubble, just two days before the team has to reduce its roster to 53 players.

A long summer of training camp and preseason is almost complete, and a week from now the entire focus will be on the Packers’ Week 1 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

But this week’s game against the Chiefs also carries importance. Maybe not to the win-loss column, but to roster decisions that will be made in the day or so that follows.

The wide receiver competition has been a difficult one to call. Can Darrius Shepherd or Allen Lazard (if he plays) continue their excellent form? By doing so, they’ll put the Packers in a difficult position as they won’t want to lose either player and might have to keep both on the final 53.

J’Mon Moore has been inconsistent this summer. He hasn’t made the impact in the preseason he would’ve hoped. So far, he has just three receptions on five targets for 12 yards and a touchdown. This game is his final preseason opportunity to show what he can do.

Cornerback Chandon Sullivan has played well in preseason. Making the roster at a position the Packers have good depth won’t be easy but, again, a good game here could make the difference.

The fact is that not everyone playing in this game will make the 53-man roster. But that doesn’t mean they won’t play this season. Not only is this final preseason game an audition to make the Packers’ roster, but also the other 31 teams too. By putting good film on tape here, it could lead to an opportunity elsewhere if not with the Packers.

Green Bay’s attention will soon turn to the season opener, but this Thursday’s game against the Chiefs is an important one for the players on the roster bubble.
