5. DeShone Kizer/Tim Boyle

The competition between DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle appears to be about even. Both have had their bright spots in the preseason with Boyle making the biggest noise last week versus Oakland. Both have also been inconsistent.

In 2013, the Packers completely reset at the backup position after uninspiring performances from Vince Young, Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman. The team brought in veteran Seneca Wallace to be the backup, while signing Scott Tolzien to the practice squad. We all know how that season went, as it took the luck of getting Matt Flynn midseason to save the day after Aaron Rodgers got hurt.

Could the same happen this year?

Should Boyle have another performance like he had last week, that would be enough to secure a roster spot, but would the Packers feel comfortable playing Boyle if Rodgers got hurt?

The Packers have seen what Kizer can do in the regular season. They have two games and an 0-16 season to help understand what he brings in addition to the hours of practice time.

The Packers will have tough decisions to make all over the roster and one of the biggest is between these two. Could both make it to the initial 53 and continue to learn and be groomed? Or will it be 2013 all over again and the Packers go looking for replacements?

At this point, it’s difficult to determine. One, or both, will have to play well to not only earn the backup job, but also a spot on the roster.
