Packers predictions: Four tight ends make the roster
The Green Bay Packers have a talented group at tight end, and they should keep four on the 53-man roster.
Who would you cut — Jimmy Graham? Marcedes Lewis? Jace Sternberger? Robert Tonyan? It’s tough to make a case for moving on from any of them. But fortunately for the Green Bay Packers, they don’t have to.
Keeping four tight ends may sound like a lot, but the Packers might not have much other choice. All four can play important roles on offense this season.
Graham is aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 2018 season, but still one in which he finished second on the team in receiving. It’s his touchdown total of just two that the Packers will hope increases.
But considering that only one other time has Graham ever finished with such a low total (in 2015 when he missed five games), and that he’s scored five or more TDs seven times in nine years, there should be confidence he’ll find the end zone more frequently.
For a Packers offense aiming to run the ball, they’ll need Marcedes Lewis, the best blocking tight end on the team. Lewis can also contribute in the passing game.
Rookie Jace Sternberger has missed time due to a concussion this summer, and he might not make a huge contribution on offense right away, but he’s still an important player for this season and the future.
One player to be excited about is Robert Tonyan. Aaron Rodgers had high praise for Tonyan this summer, and he has the talent to play more snaps on offense this season.
The Packers have four talented tight ends who should all make the roster.
Graham will be the starter and Lewis is an excellent blocker, but Tonyan should seen an increase in snaps this season and could play an important role in the passing game. If Sternberger can also contribute in his rookie year, the Packers will have great depth at the position.
