Tim Boyle

Tim Boyle didn’t do anything spectacular, he also didn’t do anything catastrophic. Boyle starting and having limited playing time was a clear indicator he is ahead of DeShone Kizer in the race for backup QB.

The question now becomes, are the Packers comfortable enough to have only Boyle and Aaron Rodgers on the roster with a third, Manny Wilkins, being groomed on the practice squad? We will have our answer soon enough as the Packers must be down to 53 by Saturday evening.

Wilkins only had one throw and a highlight hurdle to speak for on his night, so it’s hard to say how he could fare with more playing time. After six weeks of practice, the Packers evaluators know what they have in him and what his potential ceiling could be.

Being able to carry only two quarterbacks on the active roster with one on the practice squad will allow the team to go heavy at another position, possibly keeping an extra lineman, defensive back, or wide receiver.

The Packers will still have some grooming to do with Boyle regardless of how many quarterbacks they keep. But they do have a lot to work with. Boyle stands tall in the pocket, has a good arm with decent touch, where Kizer has yet to take the next step in his development. Kizer is still too quick to leave the pocket and run. Yes, he has great athletic ability, but it would be nice to see him trust his line and go through his progressions and stand tall the way Boyle does.
