Dexter Williams

The battle between Dexter Williams and Tra Carson came down to the wire. Carson again got the start and Williams again showed he was the better runner.

Carson blasted out of the gates with a 15-yard run and then needed five carries to get 10 more yards. Carson does not have the speed to get around the edge. His style is best suited for a straight-ahead smash-mouth game plan, not as much for the wide zone LaFleur likes to run.

Williams’ stats weren’t much better than Carson’s, but he did show speed to get around the edge and pose a threat to take the ball to the house every time he touches the ball.

Williams still has a long way to go; that’s expected as a sixth-round pick. But he does have natural talent Carson doesn’t have. Catching the ball can be taught, as can pass protection. But speed can not be.

If in the unlikely event the Packers go without a fullback, Carson and Williams both should have a place on the roster. I just don’t think that happens. Coach LaFleur showed how much he values the position and I believe one makes the initial 53.
