Quarterbacks (2)

Aaron Rodgers, Tim Boyle

The Packers had a tough decision to make at quarterback. Both Tim Boyle and DeShone Kizer played well during the preseason, but it’s Boyle who has won the backup job. For now, that is. The New England Patriots released Brian Hoyer on Saturday. If the Packers decide to sign a veteran QB, Hoyer could be an option.

Keeping Boyle over Kizer shows that Brian Gutekunst is willing to move on from a player who he traded for. His first notable move as GM was to trade for Kizer, but he’s decided not to keep him on the initial 53.

Running backs/Fullbacks (4)

RB: Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, Dexter Williams

FB: Danny Vitale

No real surprises here. Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams were roster locks at running back, and that was also true for Danny Vitale at fullback. The question was whether the Packers would go with three or four running backs, and if the former, who they’d choose between Dexter Williams and Tra Carson.

The Packers drafted Williams on the third day of April’s draft, and considering his potential in Matt LaFleur’s offense, this was the right choice. Dexter Williams will enter the season third on the depth chart, but as he improves, he could take on a bigger role for the Packers.
