Packers vs. Bears: Three key matchups in season opener
3. Aaron Jones vs. David Montgomery
Aaron Jones and David Montgomery won’t be on the field at the same time on Thursday night, but the running back who has the best game might play a big part in determining which team wins the game.
Both the Packers and Bears want to run the football, and the team that does that most successfully will be able to control the tempo of the game.
Green Bay’s lead back is third-year Aaron Jones. He led the NFL in yards per attempt in 2018, and given a featured role could have a breakout season. David Montgomery will be making his NFL debut for the Bears on Thursday. He’s one of the most exciting young running backs in the league having rushed for 2,362 yards and 24 touchdowns in his final two seasons at Iowa State.
Jamaal Williams and Dexter Williams will also carry the football on Thursday, and the Packers defense will also have to worry about Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis, but it’s Jones and Montgomery who should lead the way for their teams.
We know how good a player Jones is, but he’ll be starting in a new offense. Montgomery hasn’t played an NFL snap, but he is a talented player with the potential to have a great season.
This matchup may determine which team starts 1-0.
