Packers: Eight players who might not be back in 2020 season
2. Blake Martinez
Blake Martinez is a free agent in the offseason and the Packers will have a difficult decision to make. Overall, Martinez is a solid player and he makes a lot of tackles. He is currently third in the NFL for tackles in 2019 and led the league in that category two years ago. But Martinez often struggles in coverage. The Packers lack speed at inside linebacker.
The Packers may decide to offer him a new deal, but it’ll all depend on the cost and length of the contract. If there is interest from other teams, Gutekunst shouldn’t overspend. For that reason, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Martinez is playing elsewhere in 2020.
1. Jimmy Graham
Gutekunst hit a home run by signing Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith in free agency, and Adrian Amos was also a great addition to the defense this year. But Gutekunst’s biggest mistake in free agency so far came last year when he signed Jimmy Graham to a three-year contract.
Big plays from Graham are few and far between. He hasn’t made the impact in the red zone many expected, catching just five touchdown passes in 27 games. In 11 games this season, Graham has 28 receptions for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He already has one more touchdown than last year, but he’s on pace for fewer receiving yards.
Graham still has one year left on his deal, but the Packers can save $8 million by moving on next offseason, according to Spotrac. It’s a move Gutekunst should make.
