Packers: Five players who should be All-Pros in 2019
1. Za’Darius Smith
Preston Smith isn’t the only pass rusher signed in free agency who has played at an All-Pro level for the Packers. Za’Darius Smith has arguably been the team’s standout performer on defense.
Smith has 10 sacks on the season, good for ninth in the NFL, which is impressive on its own. But that doesn’t tell the full story. That doesn’t show just how dominant he has been.
Take the victory over the New York Giants as an example. Smith was dominant all game long, consistently pressuring Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Smith finished with five quarterback hits but zero sacks.
Smith is tied for the league lead in QB hits this year with 29. He also ranks 10th in the NFL among defensive ends and outside linebackers in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric. According to the metric, Smith’s pass rush win rate is 24 percent.
But that’s not all. According to Pro Football Focus, Smith leads all edge defenders with a pressure rate of 18.2 percent. And he’s achieved that despite being the most double-teamed edge rusher in the league this season, according to Seth Walder of ESPN.
If that isn’t enough for Smith to be named an All-Pro this season, then I have no idea what it will take.
