Mike McCarthy is back.

I don’t think many Green Bay Packers fans will be too thrilled, but the Dallas Cowboys have just made an excellent hire.

Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy is set to replace Jason Garrett as the Cowboys head coach, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

The end of McCarthy’s run in Green Bay wasn’t ideal, but he had a highly successful career with the Packers and could help get the Cowboys back to the playoffs next season. He certainly has the talent on offense to work with. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Cowboys re-sign Randall Cobb now that McCarthy is the coach.

There will be no rematch for McCarthy against the Packers in 2020, however, as the Cowboys aren’t on the schedule for next season. Of course, that would all change if the two teams were to meet in the playoffs. Watching a Packers-Cowboys playoff game with McCarthy on the opposite sideline wouldn’t feel right.

Barring a matchup in the playoffs next year, the earliest the two teams will meet again is in 2021 at Lambeau Field, but only if they finish in the same position of their respective divisions next season. The Packers are scheduled to host the Cowboys in 2022.

While it’ll never be easy to root for the Cowboys, we can wish McCarthy the best in Dallas. He led many great teams over the years in Green Bay and brought the Lombardi Trophy home in 2011. A great man and part of the community, and a successful coach on the field.

And let’s be thankful he didn’t end up in the NFC North. While there are currently no head coach vacancies in the division, it would have been difficult for Packers fans if he had ended up being hired by the Minnesota Vikings or Chicago Bears.

How do you think McCarthy will do with the Cowboys in 2020?
