The Green Bay Packers need to make significant changes at the wide receiver position in 2020, which could be bad news for Geronimo Allison.

Despite going undrafted in 2016, Geronimo Allison made the most of his opportunities and climbed up the depth chart to play a key role in Mike McCarthy’s offense.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go to plan in the first year under Matt LaFleur which could mean the Packers move on this offseason.

This season, Allison caught 34 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns, averaging a career-low 8.4 yards per reception. He finished with fewer receiving yards in 16 games this season than in just five games in 2018. This was despite the fact he set a career-high in targets with 55. As a result, his 5.2 yards-per-target average was a new career-low.

Allison was expected to play a significant role in LaFleur’s offense this season but he struggled to make a consistent impact. Drops were an issue throughout the year, and Allison averaged just 17.9 yards per game.

Wide receiver will likely be a position the Packers address multiple times this offseason. And with Allison set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, it’s hard to imagine he’ll be offered a new long-term deal.

Make no mistake, what Allison has achieved is impressive after being signed as an undrafted free agent four years ago. With the Packers, he’s made 89 receptions for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns. Whether he ends up in Green Bay or elsewhere this offseason, he’s talented enough to deserve another opportunity.

Maybe it was just a bad season for Allison and he lost confidence after a slow start. Maybe he’s not a good scheme fit in LaFleur’s system.

Time will tell what the Packers’ plans are, but with a possible overhaul at the wide receiver position, it seems unlikely Allison will be re-signed after a disappointing season.
