Packers: Mason Crosby signs new three-year contract
Mason Crosby has signed a new three-year contract with the Green Bay Packers.
After a career-best 2019 season, Mason Crosby will be returning for his 14th year with the Packers.
Re-signing Crosby was one of the top priorities for the Packers this offseason and they’ve got it done just under a month before the start of free agency.
Crosby’s agent tweeted that he’s agreed on a three-year deal.
The team’s longtime kicker has been one of the most consistent players at his position for many years. This past season, Crosby converted 91.7 percent of his field goals, the fifth-best percentage in the league. He also hit two game-winners, both against the Detroit Lions.
Since missing five kicks against the Lions in the 2018 season, Crosby has been outstanding. In the 28 games since then, he’s only missed four field goals, converting 41 of his past 45 (91.1 percent) and 72 of 73 extra-point attempts (98.6 percent).
This is great news for the Packers. It was a deal they had to get done.
Had Crosby become a free agent, there’s no doubt many teams would’ve been desperate to sign him. Finding consistency at the kicker position isn’t an easy task. When you find one, you best not lose them.
Details of the contract haven’t been announced but it’s safe to assume Crosby will become one of the highest-paid kickers in the league. It’s a price worth paying for the consistency he brings to the team.
Crosby will turn 36 before the start of the 2020 season, but given the success many kickers have had into their 40s, this isn’t a concern. Crosby could still have many years ahead of him, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he is given another new deal three years from now.
Crosby is one of the NFL’s best at his position, and he’s staying in Green Bay.
