5. No. 2 running back

Coming off a 23-touchdown season, Aaron Jones is the clear leader of the Packers’ backfield. But strengthening the depth at running back will be on the to-do list for the Packers over the next few months.

Head coach Matt LaFleur made that clear when speaking to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

“We’re gonna need not only those two guys,” LaFleur said, referencing Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. “But I do think we’re gonna need a third guy to put into that mix moving forward.”

LaFleur spoke about the physicality of playing the position and the need for depth. It can be a long season, especially if you plan on going deep in the playoffs.

Dexter Williams barely played in his rookie season and couldn’t seem to earn the trust of the coaching staff. One has to wonder if he’ll be part of the team’s plans in 2020.

If the Packers sign a free agent running back or use a mid-round pick at the position, there could be competition for the No. 2 job with Jamaal Williams. Williams is a good player who can contribute on all three downs, but he isn’t a game-changing running back like Jones.

Adding depth could also create a battle for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
