Packers pre-free agency three-round mock draft 2020
Round 3 (94): Cam Akers, RB, Florida State
It’s likely not a matter of if, but when the Packers will draft a running back. Despite having a good 1-2 punch in the backfield led by superstar Aaron Jones, head coach Matt LaFleur spoke about the need for more depth at the position.
Jones posted an outstanding 19 regular-season touchdowns with four more in the playoffs in 2019. Jamaal Williams is a good complement to Jones, a powerful runner who can play on all three downs.
But whenever Jones had a quiet game, the Packers offense too often fell flat. Adding another running back would make a lot of sense in the draft. On Day 2, an option could be Cam Akers out of Florida State.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Akers ranks third among running backs for Athleticism Score, and also third at the position for Overall Draft Score.
Despite playing behind a struggling offensive line, Akers still averaged just under five yards per carry in 2019, finishing with 1,144 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. According to Pro Football Focus, 3.9 of the 4.9 yards per carry he averaged came after contact, which is incredible.
The Packers will be looking for a third option in the backfield, and Akers could make a difference right away.
