The Green Bay Packers’ signing of Rick Wagner could mean Bryan Bulaga is on his way out.

Wow. It’s already been a hectic start to free agency for the Green Bay Packers, and it’s only just begun.

After reportedly signing inside linebacker Christian Kirksey to a two-year deal, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport now reports the team is signing tackle Rick Wagner.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, it’s a two-year deal worth $11 million, with $3.5 million fully guaranteed. That’s a low-risk signing for a veteran right tackle who could start right away for the Packers.

Wagner spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Lions but was released on Friday to free up cap room.

This move likely signals that Bryan Bulaga won’t be back in 2020. He’s a free agent and will be able to talk to other teams later today during the two-day negotiating period. Considering the contract Anthony Castonzo signed with the Indianapolis Colts, re-signing Bulaga might be unrealistic for the Packers.

It could also mean Jared Veldheer won’t be returning to Green Bay next season.

By signing Wagner, the Packers are getting an experienced tackle who can start in 2020 while also not coming with a big salary-cap hit. That doesn’t mean they won’t also draft a tackle later this offseason, but it now eases the pressure on GM Brian Gutekunst to do so.

A good plan would be to use an early pick on a tackle while starting the season with Wagner. If the rookie makes an immediate impact like Elgton Jenkins did and wins the starting job, Wagner would be a great backup option to have. If not, he can start while the rookie tackle develops. And at a premium position, depth is crucial.

It’s been a busy start to free agency for the Packers and Gutekunst is finding ways to improve the roster.
