Packers: Few WR options left in free agency with Robby Anderson gone

If the Green Bay Packers still plan to add a pass catcher in free agency, their options are running out.

At this stage, the best option might be to wait it out until the 2020 NFL Draft when they’ll have the opportunity to add talent from one of the deepest receiving classes in years.

But if Packers GM Brian Gutekunst still hopes to add a veteran receiver, he might need to do so sooner rather than later.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Robby Anderson is signing a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, taking the best remaining free-agent receiver off the market.

It’s unclear whether the Packers had interest in signing Anderson, but his two-year deal is worth $20 million, according to Schefter. It’s a move the Packers could’ve made work.

Schefter reported last week the Packers were interested in signing Emmanuel Sanders, but Sanders preferred to sign with the New Orleans Saints.

Remaining free agents at the position include Breshad Perriman, Taylor Gabriel, Tajae Sharpe and Paul Richardson. If Gutekunst adds a receiver in free agency now, it should be a cheaper move to improve the overall depth at the position. Anderson or Sanders could’ve been a solid number two option in Matt LaFleur’s option.

Gabriel would be an interesting addition. His speed and ability to make huge plays deep downfield would give the offense something it currently lacks. He wouldn’t need to be a high-volume target but would improve Green Bay’s depth chart at wide receiver either as the number three or four option.

Gutekunst could then use an early-round draft choice to find another starter on the outside to pair with Davante Adams.

With Anderson signing with the Panthers, there’s one less top free agent available at wide receiver, perhaps increasing the chances the Packers use an early draft pick at the position.
