The Green Bay Packers should look to make an affordable signing at cornerback.

Brian Gutekunst’s approach to free agency this offseason has been to make low-risk, affordable moves at positions of need.

So far, they’ve addressed three positions of need signing linebacker Christian Kirksey, tackle Ricky Wagner and wide receiver Devin Funchess.

Kirksey and Wagner both signed team-friendly deals. Details of wide receiver Funchess’ contract haven’t been released yet but we can safely assume it’ll be another low cap number for the Packers.

There are still concerns at many positions across the roster but the Packers won’t be able to address them all in the draft. Gutekunst will need to continue to look for affordable moves in free agency that can help ensure the team has depth at key positions.

One of them is cornerback.

While it may not be the number one priority this offseason, the Packers are currently an injury or two away from being thin at cornerback. That’s a concern considering the importance of the position. If they can make an affordable move in free agency, it can ensure they have good depth and take the pressure off drafting a cornerback.

One option would be to re-sign Tramon Williams, who remains unsigned. Williams continued to play at a high level in 2019, playing in all 16 games and starting seven. Pro Football Focus ranked Williams sixth among all cornerbacks last season.

The Packers could likely re-sign Williams on an affordable one-year deal. His experience, leadership and versatility would be valuable for Mike Pettine’s defense as we’ve seen over the past two seasons.

Another former Packer to consider is Bashaud Breeland. Breeland was part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning team last season but spent the majority of 2018 in Green Bay.

Breeland has four interceptions and 12 pass defenses over the past two seasons, and he also made a crucial pick in the Super Bowl. Breeland has already played in Pettine’s defense and would add much-needed depth at a premier position.

The Packers have options at cornerback in free agency, but they should seriously consider bringing back either Williams or Breeland.
