As expected, Devin Funchess’ contract comes with little risk for the Green Bay Packers.

Devin Funchess has signed a “prove-it” deal with the Packers.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the one-year contract is worth $2.5 million including a $1.2 million base salary. As expected, the deal is loaded with incentives that could make it worth up to $6.25 million.

The good news is that if Funchess makes the full amount, it means he’s been active all season and played well. If not, the move won’t have much of a cap impact for the Packers.

Funchess isn’t the Packers’ answer at wide receiver, but if he can get back to his best, this addition will help. He’ll receive similar money to Geronimo Allison last year, so a good way to look at this signing is that Funchess is replacing Allison, who remains a free agent.

If Funchess stays healthy and gets back to his best, this move will be a bargain for the Packers.

The last time he played a full season was in 2017. That year, he caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns. If he can get anywhere close to that production in Green Bay, this will have been a great piece of business by GM Brian Gutekunst.

For Funchess, he’ll be aiming to prove himself on a one-year deal and receive a bigger contract next offseason.

This is a low-risk move by Green Bay and well worth the potential upside, but the search for a number two wide receiver goes on. Maybe Funchess will be the answer, but Gutekunst can’t count on that happening.

In all likelihood, the best option now is an early-round pick in the draft as there are few options available in free agency. Unless, of course, the Packers attempt to make a trade for a wide receiver. But that would seem unlikely.

If Funchess gets back to his 2017-best, this will be a great deal for the Packers. If not, the team can move on without a big cap hit.
