Packers conduct virtual pre-draft visit with QB Jordan Love

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly been in contact with Utah State quarterback Jordan Love ahead of this month’s draft.

The Packers sure seem open to the possibility of drafting a quarterback.

Joe Burrow won’t be available when the Packers hit the clock at No. 30 but Utah State’s Jordan Love could be. And Green Bay going with its quarterback of the future can’t be ruled out.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers held a virtual visit with Love. Rapoport noted that several other teams have done the same, with conversations taking place “via FaceTime and other virtual methods”.

While teams are unable to meet with draft prospects in-person, having conversations digitally makes sense.

But the fact Brian Gutekunst spoke with Love will only add to the discussion among fans of the potential of a quarterback heading to Green Bay in the opening couple of rounds.

Selecting a QB early is certainly an interesting conversation to be had and one I wrote about last week. The downside of making that move is using a first- or second-round pick on a player who won’t help you right away. But the potential upside is having long-term success beyond Aaron Rodgers‘ career.

Love will need time to develop in the NFL which would make Green Bay an ideal landing spot for him. He would get that time and would be sharing a quarterback room with one of the best to ever play the game. Rodgers benefited from a similar situation early in his career backing up Brett Favre.

Of course, Love could be selected much earlier than No. 30. There’s always a need for quarterbacks around the league which could mean Love is gone inside the top-15. If that’s the case, so be it.

But Gutekunst is clearly preparing for the possibility of a quarterback falling to No. 30, which is why this virtual visit makes sense.
