Packers could receive multiple compensatory draft picks in 2021

The Green Bay Packers could receive three compensatory draft picks in 2021.

The Green Bay Packers haven’t received any compensatory draft picks over the past two years as they’ve been active in free agency. That run looks set to end as they will likely receive a few bonus picks next year.

So far this offseason, the Packers have signed three players. Two of them — inside linebacker Christian Kirksey and tackle Ricky Wagner — won’t count towards next year’s compensatory pick consideration as they were released by their previous teams. Wide receiver Devin Funchess is the only unrestricted free agent the Packers have signed who could make a difference to the compensatory pick formula.

The Packers lost linebackers Blake Martinez, Kyler Fackrell, and B.J. Goodson as well as right tackle Bryan Bulaga.

Over The Cap predicts Green Bay will receive three compensatory picks as things stand. Goodson’s new deal is similar to Funchess’ contract, so the two moves cancel each other out. That leaves just the three players the Packers lost to other teams.

Over The Cap’s compensatory pick cancellation chart is a great tool, and it predicts the Packers will receive picks in the fourth round (Blake Martinez), fifth round (Bryan Bulaga), and sixth round (Kyler Fackrell).

If this stays the same and Green Bay receives three more picks, it would have a good chance of entering the 2021 NFL Draft with double-digit selections, the same as this year. This makes it much easier to trade up. It also helps that compensatory picks can be traded, which hasn’t always been the case.

Under Ted Thompson, Green Bay regularly received compensatory picks and often used them well. Star players such as guard Josh Sitton and defensive lineman Mike Daniels were selected with compensatory picks.

Assuming things stay the same and the Packers receive three next year, Brian Gutekunst will hope to find similar success to Thompson with compensatory picks.
