Is it time to draft a quarterback?

With the 2020 NFL Draft just around the corner, we’re taking a position-by-position look across the Green Bay Packers‘ roster.

We start at the quarterback position.

Green Bay’s two-time MVP leads the way, but could it be time to draft his eventual successor?

Free agency recap

No moves were made in free agency at quarterback. Aaron Rodgers, Tim Boyle, and Manny Wilkins are the three quarterbacks under contract currently.

Need in the draft?

Low.

Rodgers is still one of the best QBs in football. In the second year playing in Matt LaFleur’s system and, hopefully, with new additions made at the skill positions, we should see the offense improve in 2020.

There is no immediate need at quarterback unless it’s at the backup spot.

Draft outlook

Yet while QB might not be at the top of the to-do list for Brian Gutekunst in the short term, it won’t be long until he needs to seriously think about finding Rodgers’ successor. Maybe those conversations are already underway.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported the Packers are “doing varying levels of homework” on Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, who they also held a virtual pre-draft visit with.

Along with Gutekunst saying he’d be fine selecting a QB early in the draft, there is certainly the possibility it happens this year.

Balancing the short-term and long-term needs will be key for Gutekunst in the coming years. On one hand, he’ll want to go all-in with the hope of winning another championship with Rodgers. But on the flip side, wrecking the salary cap and not searching for Rodgers’ successor could mean many losing seasons await once he retires.

Part of the solution could be drafting a future starter at QB now, and when Rodgers walks away, his replacement is ready to go.

With the draft just over a week away, we’ll soon have the answers.
