Packers 2020 pre-draft preview: The deep wide receiver class
Wide receiver leads the Green Bay Packers’ list of needs in the draft.
The Packers should’ve drafted a receiver last year. There was a possibility it would become a big need the following season, which it did in a big way.
Now is the time to fix that.
The good news? This is the perfect draft class to need receiving help.
Free agency recap
The Packers chose not to re-sign Geronimo Allison, who signed with the Detroit Lions. Green Bay replaced Allison by signing Devin Funchess to a one-year “prove it” deal. They also brought back exclusive rights free agent Jake Kumerow.
Need in the draft?
High.
The Packers have a number of candidates for the number four receiving job (at best the number three) but no true number two target for Aaron Rodgers.
Between Allen Lazard, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown and now Funchess, the Packers have some young talent who can provide good depth at receiver, but they need to find a consistent target to start alongside Davante Adams.
Draft outlook
At No. 30 overall, the Packers should seriously consider drafting a wide receiver. If there’s a receiver they love — Henry Ruggs III would be a perfect example — who makes it beyond No. 15 overall, they should consider trading up.
Other than staying put at 30, they might also be able to move down a few spots and still land a first-round talent at receiver given how loaded this class is.
Even if they draft a receiver on Day 1, they should double-down later in the draft. Even if that means doing so in the second round. Imagine a combination of Denzel Mims and Brandon Aiyuk, or Jalen Reagor and Michael Pittman. Imagine the depth chart after making two early picks at the position.
However Brian Gutekunst decides to add receiving talent in the draft, it’s clearly the Packers’ number one need.
