Could the Green Bay Packers draft a cornerback in the first round?

Few positions have been given as much attention as cornerback for the Packers in recent years. In the past five drafts, the Packers have selected five cornerbacks in the opening two rounds.

Among them are Jaire Alexander and Kevin King, their top two corners entering 2020. But others include Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins, who are both no longer on the roster.

Cornerback can be considered a need, but how about as early as the first round? One mock draft thinks it’s possible.

NFL Spin Zone, Randy Gurzi

Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor

NFL Spin Zone’s Randy Gurzi went with Baylor’s Denzel Mims at No. 30 for the Packers. If Mims is still available at this point in the first round, he would be a popular choice among fans. An NFL Combine star this year, Mims could make a difference early in his career as the No. 2 option in the receiving game for Aaron Rodgers.

NFL Mocks, Jason Truitt

Tee Higgins, WR, Clemson

Another possible receiving option at No. 30 overall is Clemson’s Tee Higgins, which is who Jason Truitt of NFL Mocks has going to the Packers in his mock draft. Truitt wrote that Higgins “can turn a simple check down pass into something more with his superb YAC ability”, and that would help him earn Aaron Rodgers’ trust early on.

NFL.com, Chad Reuter

Jaylon Johnson, CB, Utah

Wow. Not only does Chad Reuter of NFL.com have the Packers going for a cornerback in the first round of his mock draft, but he also has them trading up to do so. Reuter’s mock has Green Bay trading places with the New England Patriots at No. 30 overall to select Utah’s Jaylon Johnson.

There are always a few surprises in the draft and this would certainly be one of them.

Johnson is one of the best corners in the class and could play a key role in Mike Pettine’s defense right away. With Tramon Williams still a free agent and Kevin King entering the final year on his rookie deal, Johnson could make a difference as a rookie and possibly move into a starting role on the outside in 2021.

CBS Sports, Dan Schneier

Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor

Dan Schneier of CBS Sports has the Packers going with Mims at No. 30. Wide receiver is without a doubt a top priority for the Packers entering the draft, so why not go and get one of the best in the class on Day 1?
