Packers: Tramon Williams’ future ‘will be determined’ following draft
Tramon Williams’ future is still up in the air, but the Green Bay Packers will reportedly make a decision following the 2020 NFL Draft.
Tramon Williams became a free agent when the new league year began last month but he currently remains unsigned.
Williams, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Packers, proved he can still be an important player in the secondary last season. And he could still yet return for another season.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said a decision will be made following this week’s draft.
And it’s an understandable move by Gutekunst. Williams can still play, as he showed in 2019, but the Packers could draft a cornerback. And maybe they’re even considering going early.
If the Packers add another cornerback or two in this week’s draft, ready to compete for a starting job in the slot, they may decide to move on from Williams, who turned 37 in March.
However, if the board doesn’t fall the way Green Bay hopes it could and the team doesn’t select a cornerback who they believe could replace Williams, they may decide to bring the veteran back for another season.
Age is the main concern with re-signing Williams. At some point, they’ll need to look for his replacement. And with Kevin King entering a contract year, drafting a cornerback or two would make a lot of sense.
However, Williams’ play last year showed that age is just a number. Once again, he was a consistent performer in the secondary, finishing the 2019 season with eight passes defended and two interceptions.
Even better than that, Williams was sixth in Pro Football Focus’ top 25 cornerback rankings following the regular season. This highlighted just how important a role he played in Mike Pettine’s defense.
And there’s still a chance he’ll be back in 2020.
