Packers 2020 Draft: Lombardi Ave staff predict Green Bay’s first-round pick
Who will the Green Bay Packers select with the 30th overall pick? The Lombardi Ave team makes their predictions.
Draft day is almost here. For the Packers, it means waiting until No. 30 overall before making their first choice.
But with general manager Brian Gutekunst, anything is possible. Will the Packers trade up? Or down? Will they select a wide receiver? Or an unexpected position? In an unusual draft, expect the unexpected.
It makes Green Bay’s first pick hard to predict. But we’ve still given it a go.
Jesse Fry
With the 30th pick in the first round of the 2020 draft, the Packers select Kenneth Murray out of Oklahoma. I think the Packers will be ecstatic if Murray or Patrick Queen falls to them here.
I feel Queen comes off the board before Murray and the Packers luck out, getting an athletic linebacker they need in the middle of their defense. I also would not be surprised if the Packers trade down and gain an extra fourth, and go into Day 2 with a pick in the top seven.
Evan Siegel
The Packers are a bit hamstrung in this year’s draft efforts. They could use reinforcements at just about every position other than safety, but will probably grab a wide receiver at number 30. While the offense is starving for speed and a slot player, Denzel Mims will probably be the best option for the team value-wise.
K.J. Hamler makes more sense as a shifty receiver, but Mims doesn’t lack in speed what Hamler lacks in size. Trading back could be an option here should Mims be gone, but right now, the Baylor product appears to be the offense’s best bet.
Christian Borman
I think the Packers will be aggressive and trade up to get a receiver. I’m predicting the Packers will find a way to make a trade with the Jaguars and take Justin Jefferson at 20, ahead of the Eagles and Vikings, who are receiver-needy teams.
In his recent phone interview, GM Brian Gutekunst said they don’t want to wait around to get their guy. They probably won’t feel comfortable giving up as much as it would take to get up to picks 10-12 for players like CeeDee Lamb, Jerry Jeudy or Henry Ruggs III, but I think moving up 10 spots for a player like Jefferson would be worth it.
Freddie Boston
If Justin Jefferson falls to around pick No. 23 or 24, perhaps Gutekunst will pick up the phone with the intention of moving up. But in the end, I expect the Packers to stay put at No. 30. With that pick, they select Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims.
This just feels like a great match. Mims has the size the Packers like at wide receiver and he also dominated the combine with a 4.38-second 40-yard dash.
Mims’ catch radius is so impressive that even Mitch Trubisky could throw a completion to him. Drafting him at No. 30 would make a lot of sense.
