The Packers have added to the running back room in the second round.

With their second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected running back AJ Dillon out of Boston College.

It’s another surprising move by Green Bay. With the majority of the top wide receivers off the board, the Packers have decided to turn to running back in an attempt to strengthen the offense.

In each of the past three drafts, Dillon rushed for over 1,000 yards and had a combined 38 touchdowns. Dillon is a powerful runner who can break tackles and run over defenders.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Dillon fits into Matt LaFleur’s plans. Aaron Jones was the featured back last season and that will likely continue, but will Dillon move ahead of Jamaal Williams on the depth chart?

LaFleur’s commitment to running the football is clear, and now the Packers have added to the running back room.

It’s a surprising move but a somewhat head-scratching one. Taking nothing away from Dillion who is a talented player, but this feels like a luxury pick. Green Bay has failed to address the wide receiver position and still has needs at key positions on defense. With one pick remaining on Day 2, there are still plenty of questions to be asked moving forward.

As is always the case, however, time will tell how this plays out. But for now, this is a surprising move, to say the least.

The Packers kicked off the draft with one of the most surprising first-round picks on Thursday night by trading up for Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. While Love has the potential to be the starting quarterback in the future, the move did little for the 2020 season. That’s why it’s so important the Packers get their Day 2 picks right.
