Packers 53-man roster predictions following 2020 NFL Draft
Edge rushers (5)
Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, Rashan Gary, Tim Williams, Jonathan Garvin
No pass-rushing tandem in the league had as many sacks as Za’Darius and Preston Smith last season. The Smith Bros. dominated with a total of 25.5 sacks, helping transform the Packers’ pass rush. Their production on the field made a huge difference but just as important was their leadership.
Once again, the Packers will need the Smiths to make a big impact in 2020. Rashan Gary’s development will also be key. He showed potential in an up-and-down rookie season. He’ll need to take a step forward this year.
The Packers didn’t re-sign Kyler Fackrell, who was a backup pass rusher last season. Rookie Jonathan Garvin is a developmental player but he has a lot of potential. He’ll offer some depth in his first year but could take on a bigger role in the future. Keeping five edge rushers could be important, with Tim Williams providing some more experience than Garvin.
As long as the Smith Bros. can stay healthy, the Packers will be able to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks. If Gary can take a step up in his second season and Green Bay gets some production from either Williams or Garvin, this pass rush can go from very good to great in 2020.
