The Packers’ receiving corps still needs work.

For a team that has drafted wide receivers as well as anyone else over the past couple of decades, it’s been hard to understand why they’ve not invested in this position enough of late.

The last time the Green Bay Packers used a pick as high as the second round on a receiver was in 2014 when they selected Davante Adams. And considering their track record in that round with Jordy Nelson, Greg Jennings, and Randall Cobb, it would make sense to keep restocking the depth chart whenever possible.

Especially this offseason. Adams has become a superstar but he has little help from the other receivers. Now was the time to draft one. But in a deep WR class, the Packers sat back through all seven rounds and didn’t draft a single receiver.

Pro Football Focus ranks Packers’ receiving corps No. 26 in NFL

Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus has ranked all 32 receiving corps ahead of the 2020 season. Unsurprisingly, the Packers rank near the bottom at No. 26.

As Linsey noted, despite receiver appearing to be the team’s top need this offseason, they’ve failed to make the moves they needed to.

"“The consensus biggest need for the Packers heading into this offseason was another threat at wide receiver to take some of the burden off Davante Adams, and their marquee acquisition to solve that problem was … Devin Funchess.”"

Devin Funchess is as a replacement for Geronimo Allison. Looking at it that way, the Packers improved.

But as a receiving group, it’s mostly the same as last year. And that’s not a good thing. Defenses will be concerned about Adams consistently beating them but they have little else to fear from the Packers’ pass catchers.

Adams had more than twice as many receiving yards as any other player on the roster in 2019 and he missed a month due to injury. No receiver outside of Adams put up 500 yards.

Allen Lazard deserves credit for a solid 2019 season, but can he take the next step?

The Packers’ answer? Sign Funchess and hope for development from their young receiving corps. They’ll need returning Equanimeous St. Brown to make a difference.
