2. Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews was an impact player and a fan favorite for a long time. He was instrumental in the 2010 Super Bowl run and for the many successful seasons that followed. His knack for harassing quarterbacks followed by his Predator celebration made Packer fans fall in love with how he played. He was dependable and even moved to inside linebacker when the position was decimated by injuries.

When the Packers chose not to bring him back after the 2018 season, a lot of fans were upset. Granted, many fell in love quickly with Za’Darius and Preston Smith, which helped ease the pain. Matthews ended up signing with the Los Angeles Rams, who were fresh off a Super Bowl appearance.

With the Smiths playing as well as they did last year, a lot of Packer fans didn’t really realize that Matthews still had a nice season with the Rams. He played in 13 games and recorded eight sacks and three forced fumbles. He was used primarily as a pass rusher, which is what he specializes in.

I know the Packers still have the Smiths, last year’s first-round pick Rashan Gary, and newly-drafted Jonathan Garvin, but you can never have enough pass rushers or veteran depth. He could also possibly play some inside linebacker if absolutely needed, although I don’t see that happening. Matthews would be a nice veteran player to bring back at the veteran minimum to rush the passer on third downs. He doesn’t have to be a key contributor on defense and would be a definite upgrade over Kyler Fackrell.
