RB Dexter Williams

When the Packers selected Dexter Williams in the sixth round of last year’s draft, it’s possible they had one eye on 2021 free agency, when both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams’ contracts are up. But there is more competition than ever for spots on the roster, and Dexter Williams could miss out.

While Williams did play on 10 offensive snaps last season, according to Pro Football Reference, he didn’t get much of an opportunity. He was only active in four games all year. Williams also failed to make the most of his offensive snaps, averaging just 2.2 yards per carry from his five rushing attempts.

Jones and Jamaal Williams enter the summer as the top two running backs once again. The Packers also drafted AJ Dillon in the second round this past April and re-signed Tyler Ervin, who could see an increased role on offense.

While Matt LaFleur has spoken about the need for more depth at running back, there’s a good chance the top four on the depth chart will be Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, AJ Dillon, and Tyler Ervin. Unless the Packers keep more than four running backs, it’s difficult to see Dexter Williams making the roster.
