How the Packers should prioritize future contract extensions
3rd priority: Aaron Jones
If the Packers are able to re-sign both Bakhtiari and Clark to new deals, also agreeing on an extension with Aaron Jones won’t be easy. There is only so much cap room to go around, but Jones is another player they won’t want to lose.
Jones averages five yards per carry in his NFL career and, when finally given a featured role last season, he proved to be one of the best running backs in football. Jones led the league in rushing touchdowns with 16, while also contributing as a receiver with three more touchdowns through the air.
Jones is an explosive player and also difficult to tackle. According to Pro Football Focus, 750 of his rushing yards last season came after being hit by defenders. That’s impressive.
Potentially working against Jones in free agency is that running backs sometimes miss out on huge deals, and the fact he’ll be 26 next offseason might not help him as a four-year deal would last until he was 30. However, if he can build on last year’s production, there’s no doubt there will be a lot of interest from around the league.
And getting Jones back on a new deal would be great news for the Packers.
