5 bold predictions for Packers, NFC North in 2020 season
5. Nick Foles gets benched for Mitch Trubisky
The Mitch Trubisky era is over, so it seems. At least for now.
The Bears declined Trubisky’s fifth-year option, an immediate red flag, while also trading for Nick Foles. Another red flag. General manager Ryan Pace called it an “open competition” between the two quarterbacks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. As the old saying goes, “if you’ve got two quarterbacks, you’ve got none”.
Trubisky simply hasn’t been good enough, and Bears fans don’t need reminding they passed up both Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson by selecting him second overall three years ago.
But is Foles the answer?
He, too, struggled last season and was benched in favor of rookie Gardner Minshew in Jacksonville. While he did lead a magical Super Bowl run with the Philadelphia Eagles, he has spent most of his career as a backup and even considered retirement in 2016.
So, what if Foles doesn’t prove to be the answer for the Bears early in the season and the losses begin to pile up?
They might have no choice but to turn back to Trubisky. A final opportunity to prove himself before he becomes a free agent next offseason.
Foles will win the job this summer, but by midseason, Trubisky will be back under center.
