Packers: Top 10 players to watch at training camp in 2020
3. Jace Sternberger
A breakout candidate in 2020, second-year tight end Jace Sternberger has an incredible opportunity in front of him this season. Sternberger is the frontrunner to be the number one tight end on the depth chart and every-week starter now that the Packers have moved on from Jimmy Graham.
Sternberger is the team’s best receiving threat at the tight end position. We could see some two-tight end sets with Marcedes Lewis or rookie Josiah Deguara also getting on the field. But, as a receiver, Sternberger’s biggest competition comes from Robert Tonyan.
But there’s also a lot of pressure on Sternberger to succeed. He didn’t make much of an impact as a rookie, which was to be expected in part because of the time it often takes young tight ends to develop, and also due to the fact he was injured for the first half of the season. But in year number two, more will be expected from Green Bay’s former third-round pick.
With potentially no preseason to get some valuable snaps, Sternberger will need to get up to speed during training camp. First, he needs to stay healthy. Then, he has the opportunity to take on a significant role as a starter in the Packers offense.
