Devin Funchess

Many Packers fans were surprised that Devin Funchess was the “big” addition at wide receiver this offseason. GM Brian Gutekunst didn’t hand out a huge contract to one of the top free agents or use an early draft pick (or any draft pick) at the position.

Even Funchess’ contract is a “prove it” deal. According to Spotrac, it’s a one-year deal worth $2.5 million. Funchess absolutely has something to prove. He’s aiming to prove he deserves a long-term deal, either with the Packers or another team.

He also has the chance to prove he can be still a reliable receiver in a good offense. After missing almost the entire 2019 season due to an injury in the first game, his time with the Indianapolis Colts didn’t go to plan. He now lands with a new team for the second time in as many years and will be aiming to make both the Colts and Carolina Panthers regret not giving him another chance.

Even the Packers haven’t made a big commitment to Funchess. With that deal, they can easily move on when his contract expires next offseason.

But if Funchess puts together a strong season — which he showed he’s more than capable of in 2017 with 840 yards and eight touchdowns with the Panthers — the Packers will want to re-sign him.
