4 burning questions for Packers at training camp in 2020
What is the plan at cornerback?
The Packers know their roster better than anyone else, and they sure seem confident at the cornerback position, highlighted by the fact they haven’t brought back veteran Tramon Williams, who was effectively a starter in the slot last season.
But on paper, the depth looks to be a real concern unless they get contributions from a few young players.
Chandon Sullivan played well in the slot as a backup corner last year, but is he ready to become a full-time starter and the Packers’ No. 3 corner? It’s a big ask. What about Josh Jackson, whose role decreased to just 10 percent of the team’s defensive snaps last season? Ka’dar Hollman only played four defensive snaps last year, according to Pro Football Reference. Perhaps the Packers have high expectations for undrafted free agent Stanford Samuels, but he’ll need time to develop.
We know how talented Jaire Alexander and Kevin King are. As long as they’re healthy, cornerback won’t be a weakness for this team. But considering how often defensive coordinator Mike Pettine likes to line up in nickel or dime, you need more than two cornerbacks.
And what if one of King or Alexander gets injured? King has never completed a full 16-game season for the Packers.
For now, it looks like the Packers are rolling the dice at a key position.
