4 burning questions for Packers at training camp in 2020
What will Jace Sternberger’s role look like?
This is the season for Jace Sternberger. The Packers’ third-round pick a year ago has a golden opportunity in front of him. If Sternberger can make the most of his opportunities, he can become the Packers’ starter at tight end for years to come.
After releasing Jimmy Graham, then not signing a free agent at the position, there’s an opening in the starting lineup. It could go to Marcedes Lewis, but his main job will be to block. It likely won’t go to Robert Tonyan, who has yet to make a significant impact in Green Bay’s offense. It’s even less likely rookie Josiah Deguara will be the starting tight end, no matter how excited the Packers are about his potential.
GM Brian Gutekunst said that they are “depending on Jace to be a big part of what we’re going to do this season”. He added that they viewed Sternberger as a “matchup problem” when they drafted him.
The Packers clearly have high hopes for Sternberger which is why they’re entering the new season with him as the top choice at tight end. But it’s at training camp we’ll get an idea of his role in the offense this season, and just how big a role he could play.
