Packers: Ranking future contract extension priorities
By Jesse Fry
5. Davante Adams
Davante Adams has this season and next before his contract is up. But it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start thinking long term towards the end of this season or the beginning of the offseason.
Signing Adams at the end of this season could also free up cap space in an offseason that may require it. Yes, that would kick the can down the road and the cap hit will have to be felt at some point, but the team may be in a desperate situation come the 2021 offseason.
Adams is the clear cut number one receiver in the Packers offense and at this point, it’s hard to see that changing anytime soon. Ensuring Adams is around beyond 2022 would be a wise move for the Packers. Even if a receiver takes the next step in his evolution this season and becomes a number one receiver, I can’t see Adams’ skills diminishing that much that the team would need to move on.
Aaron Rodgers isn’t getting any younger and keeping one of his best weapons around would be a very wise move for the team.
If this was the last year of his contract, Adams would be right after Bakhtiari. But, he does have two more seasons so get through this one, and then he should go right to the top of the list.
