Wide receivers (5) – 15/53

This might come as a surprise to see the Packers only keep five wide receivers. They usually keep at least six receivers on the 53-man roster and have often kept more than that. But I have them sticking with only five.

And there’s good reason for that. As previously mentioned, Tyler Ervin will likely spend some time lined up at wide receiver. Then factor in tight ends Robert Tonyan and Jace Sternberger, who could both be involved often in the passing game.

Matt LaFleur also gets the running backs involved in the passing game. Aaron Jones showed he can be a consistent receiving threat in this offense last year with 49 catches for 474 yards and three touchdowns, and Jamaal Williams is also a talented pass-catcher. It will also be interesting to see how LaFleur uses rookie AJ Dillon in the receiving game.

The Packers have a number of talented pass catchers, not just at the wide receiver position. LaFleur likes versatility, and getting running backs and tight ends involved as receivers will help this offense.

The top four receivers are roster locks. It would be a surprise if any of them didn’t make the 53-man roster. I have the final spot going to Reggie Begelton, which means Jake Kumerow and Darrius Shepherd miss out.
