Packers: Five standout performances from Week 1 win vs. Vikings
By Jesse Fry
5. Offensive role players
Stat line: 92 rushing yards, 19 catches, 198 receiving yards, 2 TDs
When you put up 43 points, more than just the known stars have to contribute. Yes, Aaron Rodgers had a great game, as did Davante Adams. Aaron Jones wasn’t dominant but he did have 66 yards rushing and a touchdown.
But, the role players on offense stepped up in a big way.
I mentioned Josiah Deguara with the offensive line, but he also chipped in with a catch for 12 yards.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling (four receptions, 96 yards, TD) had a solid game and if not for two drops, would’ve gotten this spot alone. Allen Lazard (19 yds rushing, four receptions, 63 yds, TD) showed why he is capable of being a number two receiver.
Jamaal Williams (42 total yards), AJ Dillon (14 yards on two carries), and Tyler Ervin (three carries, 38 yards) showed they can be good complementary pieces to Jones.
What’s more exciting is they showed glimpses of how they bring more to the offense.
As the season progresses, Matt LaFleur will be able to build off some of the jet sweep looks he gave and turn them into something more. I’d also like to see more of Dillon. Williams played well but Dillon’s two runs left me wanting much more.
Next up for the Packers are the Detroit Lions. Here’s to hoping the team can build upon this success.
