Packers: 3 free agents to consider signing ahead of Week 3
2. ILB Todd Davis
Another way the Packers can help the run defense would be to add another inside linebacker to the mix.
Mike Pettine has rarely used more than one inside linebacker on the field this season. After two games, Christian Kirksey has played on 100 percent of the defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference, but second at the position in snaps is Krys Barnes, who has only played just over a quarter of the snaps.
That’s the way Pettine likes to line up, but that doesn’t mean a player like Todd Davis couldn’t help. The depth at inside linebacker will improve once Kamal Martin is back from injury, and Barnes has played well in limited snaps, but Davis would give the Packers another talented, experienced player in the middle of the defense.
Davis was a tackle machine for the Denver Broncos, making 248 tackles in his final two seasons. In that time, he also defended eight passes, made an interception, and made 12 tackles for loss.
Davis would give Pettine more flexibility. When teams look to run the ball, put Kirksey and Davis on the field. If GM Brian Gutekunst wants to strengthen the defense by signing a free agent, look no further than Davis.
