The Packers will reportedly meet with free agent Damon Harrison this week.
As the Green Bay Packers hit their bye week with a perfect 4-0 record, it’s a good time to reflect on the first quarter of the season and make necessary adjustments.
One of them needs to be to address the run defense. Fortunately for the Packers, they’ve built leads in each game and forced their opponents to move away from the ground game. But in closer games, especially in January, the need to be able to stop the run increases.
Well, the Packers seem to agree. According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, the Packers will meet with free agent defensive lineman Damon Harrison on Wednesday.
Harrison is a strong run defender and would strengthen the Packers defense, especially on early downs. Harrison was a first-team All-Pro in 2016 with the New York Giants. In his career, Harrison has started 111 games, making 485 tackles, 11 sacks, and 37 tackles for loss.
Green Bay’s defense is strong against the pass, but a matchup with the San Francisco 49ers awaits shortly after the bye and this will be a real test of this run defense. Bringing in a player like Harrison could make a huge difference for this defense.
Green Bay enters the bye at just the right time. The team now has a chance to get healthy ahead of some important games following the week off. The Packers will aim to remain undefeated when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in two weeks.
A focus during the bye needs to be on improving the run defense. Getting Kenny Clark back from injury after the bye will make a big difference, but more work needs to be done. There will likely be interest from other teams, but Harrison could be a great addition to Green Bay’s defense if they can get a deal done.
